First Scotland and Germany booted GMOs from their countries, citing fear of GMO crops contaminating their food supplies and concern over putting their food and beverage industries in jeopardy. Now, Greece and Latvia are telling Monsanto exactly what they can do with their genetically modified crops. The tide is turning. A tipping point just became evident through the actions of two additional European countries who have had enough of the Biotech strong arm.

Latvia and Greece have opted out of GMOs, as are Germany and Scotland, as part of the new allowances indicated in legislation that recently passed for EU countries.

The geographical opt-outs specifically target Monsanto’s MON810 GM Maize, which countries may choose to grow or refuse in the next several months. This is currently the only genetically modified crop allowed to be grown within the EU at present – but only when countries give specific permission.

As Sustainable Pulse explains, “while the European Commission is responsible for approvals, requests to be excluded also have to be submitted to the company making the application i.e. Monsanto for MON810.”

If additional member states deny Monsanto, we can be assured that the biotech company will try to find other ways to force their GM crops on the world (e.g. the Trans Pacific Trade partnership) but as we collectively say NO, upholding bans, and demanding labeling, we will rid this planet of the plague that is genetically modified food.

Glyphosate spraying Pre-harvest application of herbicides as a (toxic) drying agent on wheat is an established practice on many conventional farms. The method was first suggested as early as 1980, becoming routine in North America over the past 15 years or so. Use is also widespread in the UK.

Applying herbicides like Roundup 7-10 days before harvest is viewed as especially helpful for wheat that ripens unevenly, a common occurrence. It is also considered a helpful tool to initiate an earlier harvest when weather conditions threaten plant viability. Other benefits are earlier ripening for earlier replanting and reducing the green material in the field. This puts less strain on farm machinery during harvest.

Farmers euphemistically call the practice “desiccation”. When used during wheat harvest, it can result in slightly greater yield by triggering plants to release more seeds.

The result? Most non-organic wheat in North America is now contaminated with glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup and similar herbicides.
WHO: Glyphosate a Probable Carcinogen

A March 2015 report by the World Health Organization identified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen. Several EU countries have banned it as a result with more in the works.

However, in North America, glyphosate use shockingly continues to remain a popular farming tool.

And, as it turns out, use of Roundup as a drying agent on wheat prior to harvest is just the tip of the iceberg.

Dozens of other food crops are subjected to glyphosate dousing prior to harvest as well.
But Wait! Isn’t Roundup Just for GMO Crops?

It is well known that Roundup is sprayed directly on GMO crops like corn and soy because they are genetically engineered to withstand the toxic onslaught without withering. So much Roundup is used on GMO crops, in fact, that herbicide-resistant “superweeds” are now a huge problem little more than a decade later (1).

“If Roundup kills plants that aren’t genetically modified to resist it, then why use it on nonGMO crops?”

“Wouldn’t glyphosate kill a nonGMO crop?”

“Why would a farmer do this?”

Indeed, these common consumer questions indicate the ultimate irony of using Roundup for desiccation purposes on a food crop producing farm. Killing the crop and/or the greenery around it is actually the whole idea. For crops like wheat, it evens up the field, allows for an earlier harvest, protects machinery and/or increases profit.

The  Bottom Line?

Crazy as it may seem, Roundup is used everywhere in the North American conventional food supply and not just on GMO crops or to kill weeds!

Glyphosate is applied directly to dozens of nonGMO food crops, in many cases, right before they are harvested. This is the worst possible time to apply a herbicide because it causes the glyphosate to be absorbed into the food crop directly. In other words, the glyphosate can’t be washed off later as it has become part of the food. This toxin will then be ingested by those who consume it either directly as a “whole food” or via processed foods that contain it as an ingredient.

According to the Cornucopia Institute:

Ubiquitous in food production, glyphosate is used not just with row crops like corn, soybeans and wheat but also a range of fruits, nuts and veggies. Even spinach growers use glyphosate (3).

Desiccating crops with herbicides before harvest is catching on in the UK as well where summers are wet and crops may ripen ripen slowly and unevenly. This can potentially lead to reduced yields and a lower quality crop. For example, 78% of the UK oilseed rape crop (similar to canola) is desiccated before harvest, but only 4% in Germany (4).

Study: Toxic chemicals in makeup, plastics and other everyday products are
harming unborn babies, damaging the brain and reducing IQs

(NaturalNews) Most consumers generally assume that products available on the market are proven to be safe. They believe that the government would not allow any product on the market that may be harmful to their health.

Unfortunately, this is not true. Many products sold today contain toxic ingredients with very limited safety testing. A growing number of researchers now believe that a variety of chemicals found in everyday household items, such as makeup, plastics, and food containers, may pose a serious threat to the developing brain of fetuses and growing children. These chemicals may even be lowering their IQ.

In a first-of-its-kind consensus statement, called Project TENDR (Targeting Environmental Neuro-Developmental Risks), dozens of scientists, health practitioners, and children’s health advocates are calling for a more aggressive regulation.

The aim of the coalition is to protect expectant mothers, infants, and children from toxic chemicals that endanger neurodevelopment in fetuses and children of all ages.

 

A broken system

In the statement, the authors concluded that the existing system in the U.S. for evaluating scientific evidence and making health-based decisions about environmental chemicals is “fundamentally broken.”

American children are at an “unacceptable” risk of developing neurological disorders including autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), intellectual disabilities, and other learning and behavioral disabilities. Parents report that one in six American children have a developmental disability, which is 17 percent more than a decade ago.

These rising neurological defects are very complex disorders caused by genetic, social, and environmental factors. While we cannot change our genetic makeup, the toxic effect chemicals have on our health can, and should, be prevented.

One way pregnant women can protect their little one and build up immunity is through juicing health-promoting superfoods.

 

Chemicals are everywhere

The report gives bad press to the U.S. that continues to allow these chemicals to flood the market with little or no evidence of the effects they may have on the developing brain. With the TENDR consensus statement, the authors hope to reduce toxic chemical exposure and neurodevelopmental disabilities in America’s children.

The chemicals singled out by the coalition include lead, mercury, organophosphate pesticides used in agriculture and gardens, flame retardants, combustion-related air pollutants, and phthalates found in plastic bottles, food containers, and beauty products.

Furthermore, they note that traffic pollution and smoke from wood can also affect the neurological development of both unborn baby and growing child.

While polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been banned or restricted in America for years, the authors report that these can linger in the environment for decades and are also reason for concern.

 

Chemicals are everywhere

Professor Susan Schantz, of the University of Illinois, said that these chemicals are not only found in air and water, but also in everyday products that we use in our home or apply on our skin. Reducing the exposure is possible and urgently needed to protect our future generation.

Almost every day we come in contact with phthalates and other endocrine disruptors found in all kinds of different products. As reported by the Daily Mail, 90 percent of pregnant women in the U.S. have detectable levels of 62 different chemicals.

Many of these chemicals can interfere with the normal activity of hormones, like thyroid hormones, estrogen, and androgens. Schantz and her colleagues are studying the effects phthalates and other endocrine disruptors have on the child’s brain and behavior.

Professor Schantz said that very little is known about what these chemicals are doing to children’s neurological development.

“They just haven’t been studied.”, Schantz said. She expressed that if it looks like something is a risk, many scientists feel policymakers should be willing to make a decision that the chemical could be trouble and we need to stop its production or limit its use. Professor Schantz went on to say, “We shouldn’t have to wait 10 or 15 years — allowing countless children to be exposed to it in the meantime — until we’re positive it’s a bad actor.”

(NaturalNews) In the quest for power and control, mankind has lost reverence for the biology and interconnected ecology that supports life on Earth. As mankind seeks dominion, he continues to separate himself from his natural surroundings, entering a state of disharmony that ultimately affects the natural systems in his body.

In agriculture, mankind has found ways to selectively engineer the genome of crops, taking out undesired traits to give crop produce a flawless appearance. How do these manipulations of crop DNA ultimately affect the human body?

Corporations continue to produce herbicides which are sprayed en masse to destroy the natural life science of plant growth. While the rest of the natural world feels the negative effects, corporations like Monsanto then profit from the poisons by genetically engineering their own seeds to withstand the chemical attacks they created (Roundup-Ready crops). Man-made, chemical science is replacing the natural science that has abounded and coexisted with humans since the beginning. What is mankind’s new age synthetic pesticide science doing to the harmony in the human body?

Studies already show that herbicides like glyphosate are destroying the natural microbiology that connects man with his natural surroundings. Glyphosate kills off several species of good bacteria that live in the guts and intestines of humans. These bacteria intelligently communicate with the body, aiding in digestion, protecting the blood, and activating immune system responses.

Studies show that pesticides and herbicides are also affecting the pollinators of the natural world, inhibiting their ability to fight off infectious mites and disease.

The more that mankind tries to control agriculture with chemicals and manipulations of DNA, the more he inadvertently hurts the pollinators – predominantly the bees and the butterflies. The corporations that are supposedly building the economy are actually destroying both the economy and the natural world. As the ill effects of pesticides take hold, pollinator populations dwindle, ultimately affecting the reproductive ability of important vegetable and herb crops.

A 2016 assessment from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), asserts, “Many wild bees and butterflies have been declining in abundance, occurrence and diversity at local and regional scales in Northwest Europe and North America.” The more than 80 scientists conclude that pesticides are among the many man-made problems causing the mass pollinator die-offs. Mass-produced pesticides are spurring the evolution of invasive species and pathogens. Herbicides also contribute to habitat loss.

Up to 8 percent of world agricultural production is due to natural pollinators
Without pollinators, fruit and vegetable crops suffer. Between 5 and 8 percent of global agricultural production is because of the natural pollinators. Bees and butterflies stabilize the entire agricultural system, contributing an estimated 235 to 577 billion dollars to the economy of world agriculture.

The IPBES report reminds that, “Pollinator-dependent species encompass many fruit, vegetable, seed, nut and oil crops, which supply major proportions of micronutrients, vitamins, and minerals in the human diet.”

Through four years of study, the IPBES found that 16 percent of bat and bird pollinators around the world are being threatened to the point of extinction. In Europe, 37 percent of bee species and 31 percent of butterfly species are declining. In some places there, 40 percent of bee species are threatened.

Ultimately, dwindling numbers of pollinators leads to lower crop yields, which leads to rising prices for some of the healthiest fruit and vegetable crops. The crops most at risk include apples, mangoes and chocolate.

“Pretty much nearly all your fruits and many of your vegetables are pollination-dependent,” said Simon Potts, deputy director of the Centre for Agri-Environmental Research at Britain’s Reading University.

The high yields and natural quality of more than three quarters of the “leading types of global food crops,” rely extensively on natural pollination. Strangely, this natural science of pollination is being threatened by mankind’s chemical science. Is it time to re-evaluate what science really is? How can we educate ourselves going forward to preserve the natural science that connects all living systems?

The IPBES is calling for alternatives to pesticides and the diversification of agriculture to sustain nature’s pollinators and the future survival of the human race.

Sometimes organic just isn’t available. So is it safe to go the nonorganic route if there’s no other feasible option? While organic is always best if you’re trying to protect your family from chemicals linked to breast cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, ADHD, thyroid problems, and other ills, Consumer Reports recently released a super-handy report that helps you figure out which veggies are riskier choices than others whenever you’re in a position where organic isn’t an option.

For instance, researchers found nonorganic green beans to be among the riskiest produce picks you could eat.

In the report, veteran researcher Charles Benbrook, PhD, a collaborator on the Consumer Reports report and leader of the Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources at Washington State University, had this to say: “Acephate, and its breakdown product methamidophos, on green beans was the No. 1 risk driver in 2013. That use accounted for around one-half of total risk across all pesticides and food.”

Because of this, green beans fall into the report’s “very high risk” category. And the thing about green beans is that they are consistently contaminated with toxic pesticides. Looking at the measure of both the amount of pesticide residues found on the beans and the chemicals’ toxicity, green beans have landed on the very-high-risk category nearly every year since testing began in 1992.

The Consumer Reports’ From Crop to Table Pesticide Use in Produce explains that the organophosphate chemical acephate is among the most concerning chemicals showing up on green beans, despite the fact that the Environmental Protection Agency canceled its use in 2009. (Organophosphate bug-killing chemicals are associated with brain damage in people. That makes sense, since they are designed to scramble a pest’s nervous system.)

The Environmental Working Group recently also came out with its list of pesticide-laden produce, calling it the 2015 Dirty Dozen list.

To add to this body of research, Consumer Reports‘ report on green beans andother high-risk produce (in terms of pesticides)—including peaches, tangerines, plums (from Chile, but not America), apples (from America, but not New Zealand), green beans, bell peppers, hot peppers, and sweet potatoes—makes it easier for you to make smarter choices while shopping for produce. (Be empowered by this knowledge; don’t shy away from eating produce, since eating more veggies has consistently been shown to help you live longer.)

(NaturalNews) Organic food is seemingly no longer just a trend, but a necessity. A recent report by MyFox New York states that all-natural grocers can hardly keep up with the demands for organic food. Bloggers have been capturing signs that read, “Organic eggs are currently in short supply due to increased consumer demand and limited availability. This is an industry-wide shortage and is not specific to ShopRite stores or our operation.” Similar signs are being seen in grocery stores across the nation.

Cage-free, organic eggs and certain types of organic produce are among the products in shortage across the country. Experts are blaming the season as the reason for the shortage, with many Americans making good on their New Year’s resolutions to diet and lose weight. However, others are saying the secrets of large corporate food producers have been exposed, leaving consumers more apt to purchase cleaner, healthier organic foods instead.

Current demand and cold weather conditions have caused organic food prices to skyrocket. Organic strawberries for example, are being priced in the double digits in some grocery stores. While high prices can currently be seen as a downfall, overall it’s immensely positive that consumers are waking up to the dangers of genetically modified (GM) foods that are scientifically proven to cause all sorts of health problems.

If you look at the big picture, more consumers interested in buying organic should overall lower the prices in the long run, and hopefully drive GM food producers out of business. Organic food availability depends highly on your geographic location. Take Austin, Texas, for example. In most Texas grocery stores, there are more cage-free, organic, free-range and non-antibiotic eggs than regular commercially produced eggs.

GM food consumption has been proven to cause a series of health problems including cancer, infertility, allergies, weight gain, diabetes, accelerated aging, autoimmune disorders and gastrointestinal complications, just to name a few.

The first ever long-term study on GMO toxicity conducted in France and released in 2012, showed that rats fed Monsanto’s GM corn developed massive tumors and had their life spans cut significantly. Female rats seemed to be overall more affected. Similar studies are unable to be conducted in the US because of patents that big companies like Monsanto and DuPont maintain on their products. They knowingly prohibit these studies in an attempt to keep the public in the dark about the dangers surrounding their food products and the chemicals sprayed on agriculture fields.

Luckily for the consumer, information regarding the dangers of GM foods has been consistently reported in the alternative media, and now the mainstream media, resulting in a major movement advocating for the labeling of GM foods.

Today, 20 states have proposed legislation that would require food labeling. Last year, Connecticut became the first state to enact GMO labeling, and as of Jan. 9 Maine has become the most recent state to enact similar laws. However, due to the push back from corporate food giants, certain clauses have been added prohibiting states from implementing legislature until surrounding states adopt similar laws.

Last year, California proposed Proposition 37, which would’ve required GMO labeling, but despite overwhelming polls showing Californian’s support for the bill, the initiative failed after the biotech industry used sneaky and arguably illegal tactics to persuade voters into voting against it. Some question whether the votes were counted accurately.

Despite the loss, the proposition led to massive awareness and began a snowball effect resulting in many states pursuing their own GMO labeling laws. Several states on the East Coast are considering implementing similar legislation, creating a major headache for the biotech industry. GMO corporations spent $67 million alone fighting ballot initiatives in California and Washington state.

With the processed food industry searching for an out, the Grocery Manufacturer’s Association has called for a “voluntary scheme,” or the legal term, “preemption,” that would remove the states’ ability to require labeling through a federal law. Instead of the biotech industry working out a compromise on labeling, it’s asking the federal government to make it outright illegal for states to implement labeling laws. This action would essentially end all grassroots movements petitioning for labeling. The Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) broke the story [3] that the $12.9 billion-a-year [4] natural and organic foods retailer Whole Foods Market had a policy of “don’t ask, don’t tell” when it comes to “conventional” — or non-organic — produce being grown in fields spread with sewage sludge [5], euphemistically called “biosolids.” Certified organic produce cannot be fertilized with sewage sludge, which is the industrial and hospital waste and human excrement flushed down the drains and later — in some cases — spread on some crops.

Since this story broke, nearly 8,000 activists and PRWatch readers have sent emails to Whole Foods executives asking the company [6] to require its suppliers to disclose this information and to label produce grown in sewage sludge so that customers can make informed decisions.

Mario Ciasulli, a semi-retired engineer and home cook living in North Carolina whom CMD profiled in December 2012, blew the whistle on Whole Foods’ don’t-ask, don’t-tell policy. As soon as he found out that shopping at Whole Foods was no protection against this potential contamination unless he could afford to buy only certified organic produce, he worked extensively to engage Whole Foods on this issue. He has insisted that management address his concerns about potential contamination of non-organic produce, price barriers to organic produce for those who are concerned, and the difficulty of finding out what non-organic produce may have been grown in soil fertilized with sewage sludge without labeling and accountability.  (Read Full Article)
