For the second year in a row strawberries top the ‘Dirty Dozen’ list.

Fruits and vegetables are important to a healthy diet, but the annual report from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) that ranks fruits and vegetables based on levels of pesticides may leave you confused about what is healthiest to eat.

AARP Membership: Join or Renew for Just $16 a Year

The EWG list is called the Dirty Dozen and includes fruits and vegetables considered “dirty” because of high levels of pesticide residue. At the top of the list? Strawberries, for the second year in a row.

The Dirty Dozen:

Bell Peppers
Cherry Tomatoes

The U.S. Department of Agriculture found that nearly 30 percent of strawberries tested contained the residue of more than 10 pesticides, and the dirtiest were linked to 21 pesticides.

Rinsing fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating used to be the best advice, but the EWG report also states that strawberries were “most likely to be contaminated with pesticide residues even after they are picked, rinsed in the field and washed before eating.”

Although the statistics sound unnerving, the USDA states that “overall pesticide chemical residues found on the foods tested are at levels below the tolerances established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and do not pose a safety concern.”

Also, the EWG report doesn’t contain all bad news. The good news is a list of fruits and vegetables considered lower in pesticide contamination — the Clean Fifteen list.

The Clean Fifteen:

Sweet Corn

Frozen Sweet Peas

Honeydew Melon

Only 1 percent of the avocado samples tested positive for pesticide residue. And not one of the samples from the clean list tested positive for more than four types of pesticides, while a large percentage of pineapples, papayas, mangoes, kiwi and cantaloupes were found to have no detectable pesticide residue.

Still concerned? Experts suggest buying organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible as well as purchasing produce at your local farmers market.

FYI Recall

By Chase Erwin
Sunday, September 4, 2016 at 01:27 PM EDT

Check your pantries for certain items in the “Little Bites” snack cake line from Entenmann’s – they could be part of a wide-reaching voluntary recall.

The company announced the recall this week after learning that some items could have been contaminated with small pieces of plastic.

At least one injury has been reported in connection with the recalled items.

Company officials say the presence of plastic was due to a manufacturing failure at an Illinois bakery.

The recall affects chocolate chip muffins, variety pack muffins, and fudge brownies with a “sell by” date between Sept. 24 and Oct. 8.

All affected products are being removed from store shelves nationwide.

Consumers who purchased the recalled items are asked to return them to place of purchase for a full refund.

Those with questions pertaining to the recall should phone 1-800-984-0989.

Toxics and New Borns

Study: Toxic chemicals in makeup, plastics and other everyday products are
harming unborn babies, damaging the brain and reducing IQs

by Amy Goodrich

(NaturalNews) Most consumers generally assume that products available on the market are proven to be safe. They believe that the government would not allow any product on the market that may be harmful to their health.

Unfortunately, this is not true. Many products sold today contain toxic ingredients with very limited safety testing. A growing number of researchers now believe that a variety of chemicals found in everyday household items, such as makeup, plastics, and food containers, may pose a serious threat to the developing brain of fetuses and growing children. These chemicals may even be lowering their IQ.

In a first-of-its-kind consensus statement, called Project TENDR (Targeting Environmental Neuro-Developmental Risks), dozens of scientists, health practitioners, and children’s health advocates are calling for a more aggressive regulation.

The aim of the coalition is to protect expectant mothers, infants, and children from toxic chemicals that endanger neurodevelopment in fetuses and children of all ages.

A broken system

In the statement, the authors concluded that the existing system in the U.S. for evaluating scientific evidence and making health-based decisions about environmental chemicals is “fundamentally broken.”

American children are at an “unacceptable” risk of developing neurological disorders including autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), intellectual disabilities, and other learning and behavioral disabilities. Parents report that one in six American children have a developmental disability, which is 17 percent more than a decade ago.

These rising neurological defects are very complex disorders caused by genetic, social, and environmental factors. While we cannot change our genetic makeup, the toxic effect chemicals have on our health can, and should, be prevented.

One way pregnant women can protect their little one and build up immunity is through juicing health-promoting superfoods.

Chemicals are everywhere

The report gives bad press to the U.S. that continues to allow these chemicals to flood the market with little or no evidence of the effects they may have on the developing brain. With the TENDR consensus statement, the authors hope to reduce toxic chemical exposure and neurodevelopmental disabilities in America’s children.

The chemicals singled out by the coalition include lead, mercury, organophosphate pesticides used in agriculture and gardens, flame retardants, combustion-related air pollutants, and phthalates found in plastic bottles, food containers, and beauty products.

Furthermore, they note that traffic pollution and smoke from wood can also affect the neurological development of both unborn baby and growing child.

While polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been banned or restricted in America for years, the authors report that these can linger in the environment for decades and are also reason for concern.

Chemicals are everywhere

Professor Susan Schantz, of the University of Illinois, said that these chemicals are not only found in air and water, but also in everyday products that we use in our home or apply on our skin. Reducing the exposure is possible and urgently needed to protect our future generation.

Almost every day we come in contact with phthalates and other endocrine disruptors found in all kinds of different products. As reported by the Daily Mail, 90 percent of pregnant women in the U.S. have detectable levels of 62 different chemicals.

Many of these chemicals can interfere with the normal activity of hormones, like thyroid hormones, estrogen, and androgens. Schantz and her colleagues are studying the effects phthalates and other endocrine disruptors have on the child’s brain and behavior.

Professor Schantz said that very little is known about what these chemicals are doing to children’s neurological development.

“They just haven’t been studied.”, Schantz said. She expressed that if it looks like something is a risk, many scientists feel policymakers should be willing to make a decision that the chemical could be trouble and we need to stop its production or limit its use. Professor Schantz went on to say, “We shouldn’t have to wait 10 or 15 years — allowing countless children to be exposed to it in the meantime — until we’re positive it’s a bad actor.”

For More Than 50 Years, DuPont Concealed the Cancer-Causing Properties of Teflon
By Sharon Kelly [1] / Earth Island Journal [2]
January 4, 2016

Almost two decades ago, Carla Bartlett, a then 41-year -old West Virginia secretary and mother of two, was first diagnosed with cancer – what her surgeon later labeled a “garden variety” type of kidney cancer.

“I was scared to death,” Bartlett, now 59, told an Ohio federal jury this fall during hearings in the first of more than 3,500 personal injury and wrongful death suits by West Virginia and Ohio residents against the chemical giant DuPont. “And all I could think of was not being there, not being able to be there for my family.” Bartlett’s tumor and part of her rib were removed in a surgery in 1997 that, she said, involved cutting her “virtually in half.” Though the cancer hasn’t recurred since, for Bartlett, the harm, both physical and emotional, has lingered. “It’s never out of my mind, because you worry constantly about it,” she said. “And then I have the reminder of the scar, every day, that, you know, this… this is… this was cancer; this could come back.”

Victory for Medical Choice as New York Supreme Court Reverses Mandatory Flu Vaccine Rule
Posted By jefferey On December 20, 2015 @ 5:53 pm In Headline,News

Let Health Freedoms Ring

With little public discussion, the New York Board of Health unanimously passed the Vaccine Powers Rule in 2013. The rule required New York City children attending a day care center or aged 6 months to 59 months to be given a yearly flu vaccination. For a moment, it appeared that children would be excluded from class if they didn’t receive the flu vaccine for the first time in the State’s history. California’s Senate Bill 277, signed into law in 2015, took things further by requiring all students to be up-to-date with all vaccines to receive an education in the state.
Five Mothers vs. New York

On December 16th, 2015, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Manuel Mendez ruled on behalf of The Supreme Court of the State of New York to end the mandatory flu vaccine rule. Mendez said in his decision that the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene “lacked the statutory authority” to mandate the influenza vaccines because they are not required under state law.

The New York times reported “The court ruling did not delve into the debate about vaccines. Rather, it found that the city had exceeded its authority by adding a disease to the list of those requiring immunization.” The recent suit against the city eventually reversing the flu vaccine law was brought by five New York mothers. Aaron Siri, a lawyer for the five mothers who filed the suit, said the following:

Parents across the city who, in consultation with their doctors, made the decision that the risks outweighed the benefits for their particular child, had that right taken away from them by 11 unelected individuals sitting in the Board of Health…

New York’s ruling provides a valuable precedent for Americans attempting to restore medical choice and medical ethics. The landscape has rapidly shifted from mostly absent public discussion when Bloomberg signed the rule into effect in 2013 compared to present day, which sees Americans motivated, alive, and pushing to block and change mandatory vaccine legislation at every turn.
Can Laws and Health Officials Mandate an Ineffective Product with Such High Health Risks?

Can children (or adults) be mandated to take a known health risk? Recently, Dr. Edward Belongia of Wisconsin’s Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation acted as principal investigator for CDC-funded research on influenza vaccine effectiveness.

Commenting on his recent CDC-funded research, Dr. Belongia said that:  The [flu] vaccine was significantly more effective … if they had not been vaccinated in the previous five years.

This year’s 2015-2016 flu vaccine is showing only 18 percent effectiveness in adults and 15 percent effectiveness in children. This is the second year in a row that the shot has been under 25 percent effective. Last year saw only a 23 percent effectiveness of the yearly flu vaccine.

Further, it is a fact that the latest Department of Justice numbers report regarding quarterly vaccine injury information reveals that the flu shot remains the most dangerous vaccine based on injuries and death compensated by the U.S. Government.

The elephant in the room for the State of New York and its Board of Health members that unanimously voted for the now defunct Vaccine Powers Rule is their violation of medical ethics and consent. All flu vaccine manufacturer inserts state, in no uncertain terms, that the safety and effectiveness has not been established in children.

Due to most health care professionals refusing to give out the inserts to patients, a violation of numerous regulatory laws and worldwide ethical governing bodies, the public is expected to search for answers online. The official website of the city of New York states in their ‘NYC vaccine information’ section gives somewhat deceitful and conflicting information compared to the official inserts required to accompany each flu vaccine by saying: “Healthy people between 2 and 49 years old can receive the vaccine in either form.”

Perhaps a more truthful and responsible statement by would be “Healthy people between 2 and 49 years old CAN receive the vaccine. Yet the safety and effectiveness of the flu vaccine has not been established in children.” The website also admits that serious reactions can occur from influenza vaccines.

Political Vaccine Corruption

Over the last few years, the United States has seen an accelerated growth of an immuno-political branch of the larger, deep-rooted medical-industrial complex. This immuno-political branch is comprised of deep and rampant conflicts of interest between vaccine manufacturers and political figures at every level influencing pro-vaccine policy. Numerous states are galloping towards mandatory vaccination backed by a federal government policy and regulatory agencies, themselves littered with conflicts of interest, officially aiming for 80 to 90 percent vaccine compliance of the U.S. population for every vaccine category by 2020.

According to the president of a U.S. network news division, during non-election years, 70% of the advertising revenues for his news division come from pharmaceutical ads. As a result, mainstream media is typically silent or disproportionally biased towards pharmaceutical companies and vaccines. However, the mainstream media is beginning to show interest in exposing the corruption surrounding vaccine policies and the overall push happening throughout America.

New York Daily News’ Albany Bureau Chief Kenneth Lovett reported in his recent piece the following:

The head of the powerful Senate Health Committee has up to $130,000 in investments in pharmaceutical and other health-related companies, state records show. Sen. Kemp Hannon (R-Nassau County) in 2014 invested in 14 companies that would fall under his committee’s purview…In addition to his investments, Hannon over the past four years also received more than $420,000 from pharmaceutical and other medical interests, records show.

The current trend gaining momentum in America is favoring informed citizens, the protection of medical choice, and the full return of medical ethics. Moving forward, any politician or governing body that considers overreaching their authority with laws governing health and medicine now will face a growing headwind of opposition from the media, their colleagues, and the public at large.

Baby monitors are the type of product parents buy to keep their kids safe, but one Keller family says their baby monitor started a fire.

They also say they have the forensic report to prove it, yet the company wouldn’t pay their claim and hasn’t pulled the product, so they got FOX 4’s Steve Noviello on their side.

Molly Sandlin and her husband have 3-year-old twin boys together.

They’ve done everything they can to secure their home and keep their kids safe, and that used to included using a baby monitor from Summer Infant. (READ FULL ARTICLE)

The News Just Keeps Getting Worse for West Virginia (and It Doesn’t Stop There)
by Mary Anne HittFollow for DK GreenRoots

Earlier this week my West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin said the following about whether people should be drinking the water in Charleston and downstream: “It’s your decision….I’m not a scientist.”

For the 300,000 people affected by the coal chemical spill from two weeks ago, I bet that’s very reassuring. Quite a profile in courage, our governor. Even less reassuring, the news came out Wednesday that there was another mysterious chemical spill in that leak, and officials are now testing to make sure the water treatment facility removed that chemical.

And it gets worse – how about this article featuring a former WV coal miner Joe Stanley, who says:

“I watched the coal industry poison our water for years. Now they’re telling us not to drink the water? We’ve been dumping this stuff into unlined ponds and into old mines for years,” he says. “This MCHM was just one of the chemicals we were told was highly toxic but that we dumped into old mine shafts and slurry ponds, and it’s been seeping into the groundwater for years.”

It sounds bad even before Stanley explains that coal mines are constantly pumped to clear ground water, aquifers, and underground streams: “As soon as we’re out of that mine it immediately fills with water. And where does it go from there? I don’t know, your guess is as good as mine.”

Stanley says he hasn’t drunk the water for years and that no one else should either.

We know the coal industry is getting away with poisoning our waterways nationwide, and a new study of federal data by the Associated Press shows just that. Coal industry chemicals and waste “have tainted hundreds of waterways and groundwater supplies, spoiling private wells, shutting down fishing and rendering streams virtually lifeless.”

And here’s the damning detail: “(B)ecause these contaminants are released gradually and in some cases not tracked or regulated, they attract much less attention than a massive spill such as the recent one in West Virginia.”

Coal-fired power plants are the nation’s biggest water polluters, spewing millions of pounds of toxic metals and other pollutants like arsenic, boron, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, and selenium into surface waters each year.
