CDC: 103 Ill with Salmonella Tied to Mangoes
August 30, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health officials are investigating a foodborne illness outbreak that has sickened more than 100 people in 16 states and has been associated with salmonella-tainted mangoes.
Authorities said Wednesday they are still probing what caused an outbreak of 103 cases of salmonella Braenderup infections since July, and they are trying to identify which mango brands or sources may be linked to the illnesses.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 78 of the cases were reported in California. No deaths have been reported.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency also recently reported illnesses resulting from the same bacterial strain. Several U.S. and Canadian retailers have issued releases saying they will recall or remove Daniella-brand mangoes from stores.

Earlier this s
ummer, the USDA posted twelve new GE crops for public comment with a September 11 deadline, and nine are under the new fast-tracked process. That’s twelve new GMOs to review and issue comments on in two months!
Here’s the lowdown. Three of the new crops are under the old petition process. Under the old process there is only one 60-day public comment period. Here are the three crops under the old process:
— Dow 2,4-D and Glufosinate Tolerant Soybean (APHIS-2012-0019)
Since the introduction of GM crops, the US has seen herbicide use increase by over 300 million pounds. Big Biotech originally claimed that weeds would not develop resistance to glyphosate (RoundUp), but they have and these new “superweeds” have become the driving force behind new crops engineered for stacked, or multiple, herbicide tolerances. Adoption of these new crops will lead to dramatic increases in the use of higher risk herbicides such as 2,4-D and dicamba, perpetuating the herbicide treadmill that is already in place.
2,4-D is already the third-most-used US herbicide, after glyphosate and atrazine, and as a leading source of dioxin pollution, it’s one of the most deadly. As of yet, however, it’s hardly used on soy at all. Just 3 percent of total US soybean acres were treated with 2,4-D in 2006. Not only will this percentage skyrocket once Agent Orange Soy hits the market, the amount used per acre may triple, according to the USDA.
—Bayer Glyphosate and Isoxaflutole Tolerant Soybean (APHIS-2012-0029)
—Syngenta Corn Rootworm Resistant Corn (APHIS-2012-0024)
Under the new process, USDA has also opened nine additional new crops for public comment. This initial comment period applies to the petitions for nonregulated status which include information submitted by the petitioning company. Once USDA has the completed their environmental analyses they will open a final 30-day comment period for the decision-making documents.

The Dark Side of the “Green Economy”
http://www.nationofchange.org/dark-side-green-economy-1345818161
By Jeff Conant

Everywhere you look these days, things are turning green. In Chiapas, Mexico, indigenous farmers are being paid to protect the last vast stretch of rainforest in Mesoamerica. In the Brazilian Amazon, peasant families are given a monthly “green basket” of basic food staples to allow them to get by without cutting down trees. In Kenya, small farmers who plant climate-hardy trees and protect green zones are promised payment for their part in the fight to reduce global warming. In Mozambique, one of the world’s poorest nations, fully 19 percent of the country’s surface is leased to a British capital firm that pays families to reforest.
These are a few of the keystone projects that make up what is being called “the green economy”: an emerging approach that promises to protect planetary ecology while boosting the economy and fighting poverty.
On its face this may sound like a good thing. Yet, during the recently concluded United Nations Rio+20 Earth Summit in Brazil, tens of thousands of people attending a nearby People’s Summit condemned such approaches to environmental management. Indeed, if social movements gathered in Rio last month had one common platform, it was “No to the green economy.” (READ FULL ARTICLE)

For many of us sweet corn has been a cornerstone of summer meals and a symbol of the fall harvest and Thanksgiving since we were children. However, this once benign treat has gone through a radical change. In 2011, Monsanto announced their plans to grow genetically modified sweet corn on 250,000 acres in the United States. The harvest from these GMO (genetically modified organism) fields will account for 40 percent of the sweet corn market in 2012.
Monsanto’s GMO sweet corn is bred to resist Monsanto’s own Roundup herbicide and to produce its own insecticide. Bt toxin, the regulated insecticide that is produced systemically throughout the corn plant, ensures that if an insect consumes any part of the plant it dies. The inherent environmental and health concerns associated with eating an experimental food that produces its own insecticide has not been lost on American shoppers.
Concerned consumers around the country have been working diligently to protect this staple by petitioning major retailers to ask them to commit to not selling GMO sweet corn. Over half million signatures and letters were gathered by food safety non-profits in early 2012. The Non-GMO Project encourages you to take action to help keep this corn off of your plate and out of our farmers’ fields.

Body Stress Release – A gentle therapy to relieve tension and pain
by Fleur Hupston
(NaturalNews) Many people suffer continually with a range of health problems that can often be traced to a stress overload. The human body is designed to be self-healing and continuously attempts to deal with all the stresses to which it is subjected. However, when the point of stress overload is reached, tension can eventually get locked into the body, with the result that pain becomes constant. An individual may eventually accept that feeling less than 100 percent, or living with pain, is a normal condition. Body Stress Release is a relatively new technique, designed to assist the body to release tension.
Who developed Body Stress Release?
Body Stress Release was pioneered by a South African couple, Edwald and Gail Meggersee, in the 1980s, in response to Edwald’s own crippling condition. This included lower back pain and shooting pains in his legs, an ongoing condition which apparently began when he fell from a tree at the age of five. An industrial chemist, Edwald and his wife, a teacher, decided to train in the USA as chiropractors in order to understand and possibly reverse his worsening condition. While doing so, they met a retired chiropractor, Dr. Richard van Rumpt, who had researched a different approach to chiropractic manipulation. He talked about listening to the body and using it as a biofeedback mechanism. The Meggersees returned to South Africa and built on Dr. van Rumpt’s methods.
How does Body Stress Release work?
A Body Stress Release practitioner locates areas of the body where stress is located, using the body itself as a biofeedback mechanism monitor. He or she will then apply light but definite pressure to the sites of body stress. A session usually lasts between 15-30 minutes with the person lying down, fully clothed. Several sessions may be required. Thereafter, bi-annual maintenance sessions are recommended.
Stress may be the result of mental, emotional stress or a traumatic experience, such as a car accident. Bad posture, and/or exercising which strains the body can put considerable strain on the muscles. Not to be overlooked is the attack on the human body from chemical pollutants in food and cosmetics. The body may be unable to tolerate certain chemicals, which in turn gives rise to a physical reaction in the muscles, causing a build-up of body stress.
Body Stress Release practitioners are to be found in many parts of the world, including the USA, Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Iceland, Belgium, Sweden, the UK, Switzerland, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, Japan, New Zealand and Australia.
