Broccoli Sprouts and Their Affect on Breast Cancer

Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbages contain many phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals. In fact, in the late 90’s, published studies indicated that there was a link between the consumption of cruciferous vegetables and lower risk for breast cancer.

More recently, the nutrients in broccoli sprouts and their protective effects against multiple types of cancer have seen renewed interest within the research community.

One of the key components of broccoli sprouts is a compound called sulforaphane. Broccoli sprouts that are specifically 5-6 days old contain over 100 X’s more sulforaphane than the mature plant

In 2011, the September Oncology Report, found that sulforaphane suppressed breast cancer cell proliferation and growth. In fact, the research committee found that Sulforaphane inhibited the growth of cultured human breast cancer cells, leading to cell death or apoptosis.

Another promising study in 2004 at the University of Buffalo, found that sulforaphane inhibited the growth of human breast cancer cells and “indicated a potential use of this compound as a chemotherapeutic agent in cancer treatment.”  Can you picture the medical mainstream hooking up sulforaphane drips instead of the chemical concoction IV drips? Wishful thinking, almost comical and highly unlikely!

So why is sulforaphane such a powerful protective agent? First of all, it acts as a “signaling” molecule. Once inside the cell, sulforaphane switches on over 200 specific genes that may be “asleep” due to toxicity, poor health and aging factors. Once these genes are turned back on, they produce special detoxification enzymes and antioxidant enzymes.

One of the antioxidants that it helps produce is glutathione, which is a powerful and primary antioxidant that is produced inside the cell. Glutathione actually bathes the inside of the cell, protecting it against damaging free radicals and thus reducing the inflammatory response.

Secondly, sulforaphane has been found to cause cell death to cancer cells by inducing specific enzymes and proteins that cause the cancer cells to die. It also decreases the expression of estrogen receptors, which is so important for several types of Breast Cancers.

However, the benefit of adding this super sprout to your diet does not stop there.

Multiple studies have shown promise of broccoli sprouts and sulforaphane and their effect on cancers that affect the prostate, bladder, liver, ovaries, colon and lungs.

We have long thought that we inherited diseases from our ancestors as a result of the genetic imprints. But an emerging new science called epigenetics helps us to see that we do have control over the destiny of our health.  An improved diet that is very high in antioxidants and phyto chemicals like sulforaphane can actually signal the genes and the DNA to be expressed in a healthy way instead of being expressed in a disease.

According to the National Cancer Institute, women born now, have an average risk of 12.2 percent (often expressed as “1 in 8″) of being diagnosed with breast cancer at some time in their lives.   By becoming informed about the latest research and making small changes in their diets, (like adding Broccoli sprouts), women may have a better opportunity to impact those statistics in a positive way.

Would you let a uranium mine in the Grand Canyon watershed reopen based on impact studies done two dozen years ago? The U.S. Forest Service is allowing Denison Mines Corp. to begin excavating the “Canyon Mine” — south of Grand Canyon National Park on the Kaibab National Forest — without updating its 26-year-old “environmental impact statement” looking at the mine’s impacts on surrounding lands, waters and wildlife. The Service claims no new public review or analysis is needed.

But, says the Center for Biological Diversity’s Taylor McKinnon, in fact we’ve learned plenty in the past quarter-century that could, and should, affect the decision to reopen. “We now know uranium mining threatens permanent, irretrievable damage to Grand Canyon’s watershed. This dangerous proposal should never have been approved back in 1986, and rubber-stamping it a generation later is an insult to the public, American Indian tribes and Grand Canyon National Park.”

The Canyon Mine lies within the 1 million-acre watershed where new uranium mining was banned by the Obama administration in January, after much work in and out of court by the Center and a large coalition of allies, including our supporters.

bpa-free-water-bottlesClose. Many products that now boast they’re “BPA-free” have simply switched to a BPA relative that may be equally toxic!

Regular readers will be aware of our campaign against BPA. Bisphenol-A is a dangerous, endocrine-disrupting chemical found in many polycarbonate plastics. It has been linked with serious health problems, including cancer, birth defects, and heart disease, but has been used in baby bottles, children’s dental sealants and fillings, and cash register receipts.

Some unscrupulous manufacturers, responding to the controversy, have switched BPA in their products with bisphenol-S (BPS), a BPA analogue in the same bisphenol chemical class—which may be every bit as toxic. This allows them to trumpet that their products are now “BPA-free,” and technically, they are: but they still contain bisphenol.

BPA has become a concern worldwide, and many countries have banned it in baby bottles and other applications. In the US, several states now prevent BPA from being used in children’s products, and consumers are demanding that their products no longer contain BPA—which is why substituting BPA with BPS seems like such a devious shell game to us.

Two studies published recently in the journal Environmental Science and Technology discuss how BPS is increasingly being substituted for BPA. BPS was found in thermal cash register receipts in the US, Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam in similar concentrations to original BPA. BPS was also found in 87% of paper currency from 21 countries. And BPS was found in the same concentrations as BPA in individuals from eight countries.

The health effects of BPS have been studied less than with BPA, but a growing body of additional research indicates that BPS is an artificial estrogen just like BPA, with clear potential for carcinogenic effects and damage to reproductive health.

Many companies simply do not disclose the chemical used in their plastic. For example, the famous Nalgene water bottle is made with “co-polyester” plastic. While they claim to be “BPA-free,” they do not disclose what chemical they are using instead!

Bisphenols are part of a broad family of chemicals, each with different properties but all, it seems, potentially dangerous to humans. Bisphenol AF is used in electronic devices, optical fibers, etc., and studies show it to be an even more potent endocrine disrupter than BPA. Bisphenol B and F are also frequently substituted for BPA. Bisphenol B is potentially more potent than BPA in stimulating breast cancer cells.

Despite the chemical’s demonstrative dangers, FDA has refused to ban BPA in food packaging, claiming that “there is not compelling scientific evidence to justify new restrictions” on the chemical. In the past, FDA has relied on industry studies in reaching its decisions.

How common is this?

The agony of a urinary tract infection (UTI) with its urgency, pain and uncomfortable sensations hits you suddenly without warning. The doctor predictably responds with a prescription for an antibiotic even if you are pregnant!

Is there really no other option?!

The next time you feel a UTI coming on, cure it yourself! Instead of waiting rooms, co-pays and condescending glances, keep the following list of remedies handy and choose the one that best matches the totality of your symptoms.

For lack of space, I’ve included only a few from which to choose, because they’re the most common. If you don’t get good results, then contact your homeopath who has other remedies that might closely suit you.

Meanwhile, you’re likely to cure yourself without the mallet of drugs that damage your gut and perhaps even your longterm health.

Once you’ve chosen the correct remedy, use it in the 30th potency every 3-4 hours. If symptoms are severe, the selected remedy may be given every 1-3 hours. Stop when there’s significant improvement. This may take up to 4 doses.

If there’s no change, then consider the next best choice. In either case, once you make your choice, stay with it until it proves incorrect.

Homeopathic Remedies for Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

Cantharis 30: For those who have a strong sense of urgency, yet very little is voided upon reaching the bathroom, look to Cantharis. The sufferer may be compelled to rush to the toilet and may even lose urine on the way.

Sometimes there’s a sense of frenzied desperation that accompanies the infection and the pain may make this symptom worse. Burning pain is also a strong indication for Cantharis and increased sexual interest may be noted.

Berberis 30: When there are burning pains in the urethra which are made better with urination, try this remedy. During urination, there may be pain in the loins and thighs. The urine may have thick mucus or have bright red, mealy sediment; it may also be pale yellow. After urination, there is the feeling that urine remains.

The kidneys might feel sore, bubbling, and burning, while a cutting and burning pain is felt in the bladder. There may also be sticking and violent pains which travel from the kidneys into the bladder and urethra.

Sarsaparilla 30: A UTI requiring Sarsaparilla has pain that is most concentrated at the end of urination. The urine flows in dribbles and sometimes the woman is unable to completely void her bladder unless standing. This remedy is useful for when the pain is burning, but pain may not be the most pressing symptom.

Staphysagria 30: This remedy has a reputation for aiding women who suffer UTIs after being abused, either physically or emotionally, or after a recent embarrassment. Sometimes ther’s a sense of shame that accompanies the symptoms.

So common is Staphysagria in this malady that it ought to be considered if no other remedy seems to fit the “picture” of the symptoms. It’s also the most common choice for infections that arise after sexual activity.

Pulsatilla 30: This is the remedy of choice if the girl leaks urine while coughing, laughing, or sneezing. She’s often a soft, round, and feminine-type who gets weepy when she gets these infections. Nausea and other gastrointestinal issues may also be present, particularly from eating ice cream or other rich, creamy foods. Urination may smart, but it’s nowhere near as painful as the picture presented by the other remedies.

When you first start learning about homeopathy, selecting the correct remedy for yourself or a family member can seem tricky. Homeopathy is person-specific, rather than illness-specific so it requires thoughtfulness and analysis.

But don’t give up.

Once you’ve experienced the thrill of bringing real resolution to an illness, it’s a feeling of accomplishment that you’ll want to experience again.

Dole Fresh Vegetables Recalls 1,077 Cases Of Salads On Listeria Risk.

(RTTNews) - Dole Fresh Vegetables said it is voluntarily recalling 1,077 cases of bagged salads as they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The products are past their use-by-dates and stand little chance for availability at retail, the company said.

The products being recalled are:

- Kroger Fresh Selections Greener Supreme coded N158 211B 1613 KR04 with Use-by date of June 19 and UPC 11110 91039,

- Kroger Fresh Selections Leafy Romaine coded N158 111B KR11 with Use-by date of June 19 and UPC 11110 91046

- and Wal Mart Marketside Leafy Romaine coded N158111B with Use-by date of June 19 and UPC code 81131 02781.

The salads were distributed in six U.S. states: Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

The recall follows an instance in which a random sample of Marketside Leafy Romaine salad yielded a positive result for Listeria monocytogenes in a test conducted by the State of North Carolina.

Dole Fresh Vegetables is coordinating closely with regulatory officials. No illnesses have been reported in association with the recall. The company has advised retailers to check inventories.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause food-borne illness in a person who consumes food item contaminated with it. Symptoms of infection may include fever, muscle aches, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea. The illness primarily impacts pregnant women and adults with weakened immune systems.

Nurses in the North Carolina hospital came upon the discovery after they noticed a rise in children testing positive for the THC.  Instead of contacting the police, they began a study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as to why this new outbreak was happening.

Turns out it’s not truly THC that’s in the soaps.  In fact, scientists can’t figure out why the test strips actually give false positives, but they do have some theories.  According to My Health News Daily, they could be turning positive because “some of the compounds in the soap have a structure that is partly similar to THC, or it could be that chemicals in the soap change the way the test works.”

So how is it getting into the baby’s urine?  Are the chemicals from the soaps being absorbed through the baby’s skin?  Thankfully, no; it was actually found that, during the collection of the sample, the residue left on the baby’s skin was finding its way into it.

There are at least five different soaps listed that have been found to cause the issue.  They include Johnson & Johnson’s Head-to-Toe Baby Wash, Johnson & Johnson’s Bedtime Bath, CVS Night-Time Baby Bath, Aveeno Soothing Relief Creamy Wash, and Aveeno Wash Shampoo.

“We really did this to help protect families,” said Dr. Carl Seashore of UNC-Chapel Hill who helped research the positive THC tests.   Following the study, the hospital at UNC-Chapel Hill now sends all positive drug tests for further evaluation.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) plans to fully implement a high-speed poultry production model that allows industry and private companies to take over inspection at poultry production plants. The model includes cutting 1,000 USDA poultry inspection employees and replacing them with plant inspectors who have to examine 165–200 birds per minute (bpm), from the original 140 bpm. That’s the inspection of more than three chickens per second.

The proposal, formally known as the HACCP Based Inspection Models Project, or BIMP, will improve food safety and save taxpayer dollars, according to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). But under the proposed rule, the USDA would shift federal inspectors away from quality inspection tasks, allowing slaughter lines to speed up production.

The FSIS is responsible for ensuring public health and food safety by examining all poultry for feces, blemishes, or visible defects before they are further processed.

About 1.2 million cases of food poisoning are caused by salmonella each year from contaminated chicken, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The program could pose a serious health risk by allowing a greater chance for contaminated meat to reach consumers. In affidavits given to the Government Accountability Project, current inspectors say the proposal speeds up assembly lines so much so that it hampers any effort to fully examine birds for defects.

“It’s tough enough when you are trying to examine 140 birds per minute with professional inspectors,” said Stan Painter, a federal inspector in Crossville, Alabama. “This proposal makes it impossible.”

“Cutting the budget does not justify putting the health and safety of consumers and workers in the balance,” said Wenonah Hauter, executive director of Food and Water Watch.

This week, food inspection workers (members of the American Federation of Government Employees) rallied outside the USDA to oppose the proposal. At the protest rally, inspectors held signs that read: “Chicken Inspection Isn’t a Speed Sport,” “Don’t Play Chicken with Safety,” and “Speed Kills.”

GMOs – Labeling Amendment and Push Back!

US Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today [June 19, 2012] proposed an amendment to the farm bill that would let states require that any food or beverage containing genetically engineered ingredients be clearly labeled.The Vermont Legislature earlier this year considered a bill that would have required labels on foods that contain genetically engineered ingredients. The House Agriculture Committee heard testimony from 111 citizens and hundreds more crowded the Statehouse to show their support. Despite passing by a lopsided 9-1 vote in committee, the bill languished after Monsanto threatened to sue the state.Similar strong-arm tactics by one of the world’s leading producers of genetically engineered foods and herbicides have been employed elsewhere by Monsanto, the multi-national company that posted $1.6 billion in profits last year. “It’s no mystery why Monsanto would fight people’s right to know,” Sanders said “Business is booming for the chemical company. Clearly, they have a lot to protect.”

The Sanders Amendment, cosponsored by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), acknowledges that states have the authority to require the labeling of foods produced through genetic engineering or derived from organisms that have been genetically engineered.

The measure also would require the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to report to Congress within two years on the percentage of food and beverages in the United States that contain genetically engineered ingredients.
