Documents indicate earthquake exceeded North Anna specifications

The August 23, 2011 earthquake centered just 4 miles from the North Anna nuclear power plant in Mineral, Virginia has prompted an “augmented inspection team” of the reactor by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission following the initial disclosure that the 5.9 magnitude quake’s ground acceleration likely exceeded the design specifications of the nuclear reactor.

The two unit reactor site automatically scrammed following the earthquake that shook most of the East Coast and damaged structures and monuments 90 miles away in Washington, DC when the power plant’s electrical switchyard failed to maintain a power connection to the electrical grid. Three of the four emergency diesel generators powered up as needed but a fourth generator failed due to loss of cooling water.

However, one immediate concern focuses on the miles and miles of inaccessible and uninspected buried pipe that carry tritium contaminated radioactive water under the entire reactor complex.  While the NRC “augmented” inspection will look over many of the “safety-related” components of the reactors, the federal agency has turned over all of its inspection and enforcement oversight of these inaccessible pipes carrying cancer causing radioactive tritium to a “voluntary initiative” run by the nuclear industry itself.  The question of whether or not this radioactive water is now leaking out of broken buried pipes under the reactor complex into groundwater around the Lake Anna area is chiefly up to the industry to self report; a controversy identified by Beyond Nuclear in its 2010 report “Leak First, Fix Later.”

Exxon Wins Prized Access to Arctic With Russia Deal

By

MOSCOW — Exxon Mobil won a highly coveted prize in the global petroleum industry on Tuesday by striking an agreement to explore for oil in a Russian sector of the Arctic Ocean that is opening for drilling even as Alaskan waters remain mostly off limits.

The agreement seemed to supersede a similar but now-defunct partnership that Russia’s state oil company, Rosneft, reached with BP earlier this year. The deal announced Tuesday replaces BP, the British oil giant, with its American counterpart and introduces some differences in the geopolitical bargain.

Where BP had swapped stock, Exxon agrees to hand over to Rosneft unspecified assets elsewhere in the world, including some that the Texas-based company owns in the deepwater zones of the Gulf of Mexico and onshore in Texas.

It was not immediately clear whether Rosneft would gain operational control of any Texas or Gulf of Mexico sites or merely obtain a portion of the equity in the projects.

Either way, Exxon’s concessions in the agreement further a long-held goal of the Russian petroleum industry to diversify internationally, using access to reserves at home as leverage to win the capital and technological expertise to do so.

Russia’s economy is dependent on petroleum for about 60 percent of export revenues. Policies here are also important for world oil supplies, as Russia now pumps more oil than Saudi Arabia. Yet Russia’s online fields in Siberia are in decline, threatening the prosperity and geopolitical clout that has come with oil wealth over the past decade.   (Read Full Article)

Hurricane Irene adds to US farm woes. Will it raise food prices?

Irene’s wind and rain damaged East Coast tobacco and corn crops, and flooding has hit New York and Vermont dairy farmers. But the biggest impact on US food prices is still from extreme drought in parts of the South and West.

An ear of corn hangs on a stalk in Nazareth, Pa., Monday, in a field damaged when hurricane Irene blew through the day before. From cotton in North Carolina to corn in Pennsylvania, some farmers are reporting total losses after crops were flattened by wind, submerged under water, or scalded by salty spray kicked up by Irene.    (Read  Article)

Air Pollution In Your Home

Even if You Do Everything Else Right – This Frequently Overlooked Threat can Destroy Your Health

Posted By Dr. Mercola | August 30 2011 | 3,611 views

your house making you illThe U.S. EPA has stated that levels of about a dozen common chemical pollutants are two to five times higher inside homes than outside of them. Scientists are beginning to suspect that indoor pollutants may be in part responsible for rising rates of asthma and other respiratory diseases.

Indoor pollution has also been known to cause headaches, flu-like symptoms, and even neurological problems.  MSN Health has compiled a list of steps you can take to minimize your family’s exposure with a few simple steps. They include:

  • Wait a few days before picking up your dry cleaning. Dry-cleaned clothes emit chemicals that have been linked to cancer and neurological problems right after cleaning.
  • Go fragrance-free. Some scented air fresheners can release compounds that cause headaches and eye, nose, and throat irritation.
  • Make sure your fireplace flue is working properly.  This will keep the lung-irritating particles in wood smoke out of your indoor air.

Trader Joe’s: How Long Do We Have To Wait for Them To Do It Right?

Trader Joe’s: How Long Do We Have To Wait for Them To Do It Right? : Features : Long Island Wins.

One cent doesn’t seem like much, but for some people – like the farm workers in Immokalee, Florida, who grow tomatoes for Trader Joe’s – a single penny can have a huge impact.

They’re only asking for one cent more, but Trader Joe’s won’t  listen.   That’s why the NYC Community Farmworker Alliance organized the Race for Justice outside a Trader Joe’s store in Manhattan’s Union Square on August 5: We wanted to spread the message that if Trader Joe’s pays one cent more for each pound of tomatoes, they will be able to improve worker salaries and

eliminate slave-like conditions and abuses in the fields.

Ninety percent of the fresh tomatoes produced in the US come from Florida and the industry conditions have exploited workers for decades. Still, Trader Joe’s refuses to join the Fair Food program, which asks companies to pay one cent more per pound of tomatoes, accept a code of conduct for employers, and include workers in labor negotiations.

Could an electronic nose sniff out heart failure? | Health Tech – CNET News

A good nose can be a curse. Dogs, for instance, have been shown to be able to sniff out lung cancer in humans, which means the poor creatures have to smell our breath, with a lot of smokers in the mix, one sample at a time.

Good news out of Germany, then, for man’s best friend. A team of scientists at the University Hospital Jena is testing an electronic nose system that’s able to distinguish between people without heart failure and people with it, and even between two types of heart failure (compensated and decompensated) with almost 90 percent accuracy–higher than what canines were able to achieve in the lung cancer study.

The system includes three thick-film metal oxide-based gas sensors with heater elements. Each is tailored to sense different odorant molecular types. As oxygen reacts to the heated sensor surface, the molecules interact with the sensors and change the free charge carrier concentrations, and thus conductivity, in the metal oxide layer.

Having already collected the relevant parameters for heart failure (BNP, creatinine, clinical history, etc.) in 126 patients in 2010, physicians blinded to those results then used the electronic nose to assign the patients to one of three groups: no heart failure, and then two types of chronic heart failure–compensated (a condition where treatment is able to compensate for the failure) and decompensated (where treatment is not working, and can be caused by arrhythmias, infections, electrolyte disturbances, etc.).

The sensor was simply placed on the arm much like a blood pressure monitor for three minutes at a time and then analyzed for heart failure markers. It was able to distinguish between patients without heart failure (the control group) and patients with heart failure with almost 90 percent accuracy, and then to divide patients with decompensated heart failure from those with compensated heart failure with almost 90 percent accuracy.

The team, which says more research is required to identify the responsible components, presented its findings over the weekend at the ESC Congress 2011 in France. Ultimately, the scientists hope to create a minimally invasive method to help rapidly screen, diagnose, group and monitor compensated heart failure.

What’s It Going to Take for Americans to Stop Eating Chemical-Laden Industrial Food? | | AlterNet

What’s It Going to Take for Americans to Stop Eating Chemical-Laden Industrial Food? | | AlterNet.

What’s It Going to Take for Americans to Stop Eating Chemical-Laden Industrial Food?

The simple act of sitting down together to eat real food on a regular basis can jumpstart the kind of lively discussions that get people engaged on the issues of the day.

Laurie David is a force of nature when it comes to lobbying on behalf of Mother Nature. An author, film producer and environmental advocate, she’s best known as the producer who convinced Al Gore that his climate-change slide show could reach a lot more folks if he made it into a movie.

David’s still concerned about melting glaciers. But her current campaign tackles another kind of erosion; the loss of community, civility and informed debate in our culture. Her latest book, The Family Dinner: Great Ways to Connect with Your Kids, One Meal at a Time, makes the case that the simple act of sitting down together to eat real food on a regular basis can jumpstart the kind of lively, enlightening discussions that get our friends and family engaged on the issues of the day. And isn’t that the first step to pulling our civic discourse out of its muddied ditch?

She addressed this subject at the Omega Institute‘s Design By Nature conference in Rhinebeck, New York recently, and kindly agreed to answer a few questions while she was in my neck of the woods. So, with the historic Hudson River Valley–widely regarded as the birthplace of the modern environmental movement–as our backdrop, I sat down with David for a chat about where our country’s at.

Kerry Trueman: How does this new mission to revive dinner table discussions mesh with your environmental advocacy? Is conversation the gateway drug to conservation?

Laurie David: There are all kinds of environments. But the very first one we learn anything at is our family environment. I have teenage daughters, and I see from my own personal experience, how grateful I am that I insisted on this ritual of family dinner. It’s not just about eating, it’s about all the things that happen at the table that we’re not even conscious of.    (Read more)

Unplug – Protect Yourself From EMF exposure

Unplug – Protect yourself from EMF exposure.

Unplug – Protect yourself from EMF exposure
by Lenette Nakauchi

(NaturalNews) Electromagnetic fields, or EMFs, are made of energy that is created by electronic and magnetic devices, such as cell phones, microwaves, refrigerators, power lines, and other common appliances and gadgets. The EMF is especially strong when these devices are plugged into the wall, allowing an increased amount of energy to infiltrate the area around them. For this reason, many people believe that unplugging electronic devices will help protect them against EMF exposure. But can it? Certainly.

A potentially dangerous issue, EMF exposure has been implicated as a factor that contributes to many health issues, including certain kinds of cancer, brain tumors, birth defects, fatigue, miscarriages, cataracts, headaches, stress, nausea, heart problems, and even chest pain and forgetfulness. Whether or not this is true is still, for the most part, up in the air, as scientists and researchers have pinpointed oftentimes conflicting evidence in their quest to determine the true dangers of exposure due to common items, such as cell phones. Though no conclusive answer has been reached, it is safe to say that evidence implies an inherent danger in excessive EMF exposure.

To completely avoid EMF exposure in today’s world is virtually impossible, as electricity lies at the core of modern civilization. Do not be worried by this, though, as low levels of exposure will not do a great deal of harm; the problem occurs when individuals experience an excessive amount of exposure over a long period of time. Though many people may succeed in using as little electricity as possible, the fact remains that modern technology has made access to EMF exposure easier than ever. From smart phones and laptop computers to e-Readers and tablets, technology is becoming more portable and is designed to accompany people wherever they may go.

So how do you limit your risk of overexposure? Unplug anything you are not using, including the microwave, television, computer, DVD player, and other household items. Though electronic devices will certainly continue to produce EMF even when they are turned off and unplugged, keeping them functioning at the lowest possible level will reduce the overall amount of EMF exposure that they cause.

Though simply unplugging your electronic devices may seem to be an easy answer to the EMF exposure issue, the process of avoiding as many harmful substances as possible goes beyond unplugging your television. First, you must be aware of the different sources of EMF that exist in your home or office. Then, you should make it a point to stay as far away from these sources as possible. For example, try sitting farther back from the television or not standing in front of the microwave when heating up your leftovers. Simply understanding where the risk lies and reacting in a positive way can greatly reduce your EMF exposure.

Additionally, you could consider replacing your high EMF devices with electronics that do not plug in. For example, try using a battery operated alarm clock instead of one that plugs into the wall. You can also utilize a hands-free device for your phone, to keep the actual body of the cell phone as far away from you as possible without giving up the convenience that the cell phone offers.

Overall, unplugging your electronic devices is a great way to protect yourself against EMF exposure. Though the research on the dangers of EMF exposure is still categorized as inconclusive, the dangers of excessive exposure have been made clear. By staying as far away from electronic devices as possible and by disconnecting them from the wall, you can decrease your exposure and improve your overall well-being.
