(NaturalNews) You have likely seen them dancing through the air and gracing the petals and leaves of various plants and shrubs. But a new study published in the journal Insect Conservation and Diversity says that the popular Monarch butterfly, which is an absolute necessity for farmers, is on the decline. And the cause? Genetically-modified (GM) crops like corn, soy, and cotton, which today blanket millions of acres of American cropland.

Though not necessarily in the same vein as bees and bats, Monarch butterflies are still considered to be migrational pollinators. They travel very long distances and often inadvertently pollinate various flowers and plants. But Monarchs rely on milkweed plants to breed — milkweed is actually the only plant on which Monarch larvae can feed — and the use of pesticides in GM agriculture is contributing to the elimination of milkweed, and thus the elimination of Monarchs.

The study explains that during the 2009 – 2010 Monarch overwintering season, which represents the time during which eastern North American Monarch butterflies hold out through the winter in warmer Mexico, populations reached an all-time low. And while they increased slightly the following year, they still remained at dismally low levels.

Besides loss of forest in overwintering areas and continued land development, the report tacks the “expansion of GM herbicide-resistant crops, with consequent loss of milkweed host plants” as the culprit in declining Monarch butterfly populations. After all, Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide specifically targets milkweed for termination, and roughly 150 million pounds of the poison are applied to US cropland every year.

If GM crops continue to take over the whole of agriculture with great strides, as they continue to do, Monarch butterflies (as well as bees and bats), may eventually become extinct. And without these pollinators, of course, it will be no longer possible to grow food.

Consolidation of seed companies leading to corporate domination of world food supply

Consolidation of seed companies leading to corporate domination of world food supply

by Ethan A. Huff, staff writer

(NaturalNews) Throughout the history of agriculture across the globe, farming has always been a diversified sector of the economy. Small, self-sustaining, family farms were the order of the day in most cultures. Even as small farms grew larger and more specialized over time, many of them still saved seeds or purchased them from other farmers, which kept control of farming in the hands of the people.

But today everything has changed, as large chemical and agribusiness firms have acquired or merged with seed companies and other agricultural input companies. They have successfully gained a foothold on genetically-modified (GM) crops with transgenic traits.

These primary factors and several others have facilitated a crescendo towards the global domination of agriculture by corporations, and thus the world’s food supply.

The dismal state in which we find ourselves today did not come overnight, of course, but it did pick up rapid speed after the introduction of GM crops in the mid-1990s. Since that time, multinational corporations like Monsanto, DuPont, and Syngenta have seized a significant amount of control over the global seed industry, which has greatly limited agricultural diversity and freedom.

The ability to patent both seeds and seed traits has also added injury to insult, as the ability to obtain natural or heirloom seeds is becoming increasingly difficult, and many farmers feel they have no choice but to go with the flow.

Professor Philip H. Howard from the Department of Community, Agriculture, Recreation and Resource Studies at Michigan State University published a study in 2009 entitled Visualizing Consolidation in the Global Seed Industry: 1996 – 2008 that analyzes the trend in agriculture towards corporate dominance.

The report, which was featured in a special issue of the journal Renewable Agriculture, provides both an extensive data analysis of agriculture’s dramatic transformation over the past several decades, as well as a highly-informative visual analysis of this truly shocking hostile takeover situation.

The ‘Big Six” pharmaceutical and chemical companies have acquired, created joint ventures with hundreds of seed companies over the past 15 years

In order to help assist his readers in understanding the state of the seed industry, Prof. Howard developed a very informative graphic that displays the reality of who really controls the seed industry. (READ FULL ARTICLE)

A recent study examined blood samples that were taken from California women at different time periods — the 1960s, the 1980s, and 2009.  They were examined for the presence of 12 perfluorinated compounds (PFCs).

In each time period, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) was present at the highest concentration, followed by perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).

According to the study, as reported by Green Med Info:

“We found the highest levels of PFOS … and perfluorohexane sulfonate … in the 1960s samples, possibly reflecting widespread use of precursor PFCs … For PFOA, there was an approximately 10-fold increase in median concentrations from the 1960s … to the1980s … and a slight drop in the 2009 samples … For longer chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs), there was a continuous build-up in serum from the 1960s to 2009.”

Why McDonald’s Happy Meal Changes Are More Hype Than Health

McDonald’s sent out a press release yesterday to announce “healthier” changes to its Happy Meals.

Healthier?  Not quite.  The company is announcing a “Commitment to Offer Improved Nutrition Choices” [my emphasis].

The comprehensive plan aims to help customers — especially families and children — make nutrition-minded choices whether visiting McDonald’s or eating elsewhere.

Menu changes underway include the addition of more nutritionally-balanced choices that meet McDonald’s reputation for great taste and affordability, along with an increased focus on providing nutrition information that enable customers and employees to make simple, informed menu decisions.

Maker of popular smartphone and tablet, Apple Inc, is more cash-rich that the US government.

In its latest earnings announcement, Apple said that its cash holdings has gone past US$76 billion, a large part of which came from sales of the iPad and iPhone.

The US government, on the other hand, has US$73.7 billion in cash reserves.

Meanwhile, Congress and Republicans are still in a deadlock over the US debt ceiling as the Aug 2 deadline to raise it nears.

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner told Congress he would have to suspend investments in federal retirement funds until Aug 2 to allow the government more room to continue borrowing in the debt markets.   (Link)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles councilwoman wants to give up the right to build a park on the former site of a controversial community farm south of downtown and take a cash payout to spend at existing parks instead.

Councilwoman Jan Perry says in a letter this month to the city agency that agreed to a deal to sell the 14-acre property eight years ago that it’s not a practical location to build a new park and the money could be better spent at nearby facilities.

She wants commissioners to let the land’s owner pay the city an estimated $3.6 million dollars instead of setting the property aside for a park.

The garden formerly at the site was bulldozed five years ago amid protests from Darryl Hannah, Joan Baez and other celebrities.

Holistic first aid for the summer season

marigold

Summer has unofficially started — and it’s a season where increased outdoor activities can be the source of cuts, bruises, scrapes, dehydration and sunburn.

Cuts and scrapes: Clean wound with cold water and mild soap. Apply crushed yarrow leaves or flowers to the injury to stop bleeding. An ice pack can help bring down swelling and reduce pain.

Bruises: Arnica Montana taken both as homeopathic sublingual pellets and applied externally to the bruise, will reduce swelling and assist with rapid resolution of “black-and-blue” discoloration.

Insect bites: Apply a compress with two to three teaspoons of dried, crushed flower buds of Calendula officinalis (a.k.a. marigold) steeped in hot water, to reduce inflammation and itching. Alternatively, a small amount of tea tree oil can be used for its antiseptic properties, or lavender oil to reduce itching at the site.  (Read more)

TOKYO Japanese authorities this week released information that paints a more worrisome picture of the ongoing nuclear crisis than the central government has previously admitted.

More than 1,600 workers may have been exposed to dangerous limits of radiation in the first weeks after the March 11 tsunami swamped the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear power station about 150 miles northeast of Tokyo, according to a government report completed in April.

Meanwhile, the Agriculture Ministry announced that at least 2,900 cattle ate rice straw contaminated with radioactive isotopes above legal limits, leaving thousands of consumers across Japan wondering whether they have ingested cancer-causing particles.

In addition, authorities posted online maps showing the fallout of radioactive cesium and iodine from a “nuclear cloud” that floated over the greater Tokyo area, home to more than 40 million people, on March 15.  (Read Full Article)

7 Blockbusters’ Patents Expire Soon – Drug Prices Will Plummet For Millions Of People

26 Jul 2011

By the end of next year, 7 of the 20 top selling medications will lose their patent protection, making way for much cheaper generic versions. This is a godsend for patients, and a serious concern for the pharmaceutical industry which depends so much on high incomes for research and development.

It won’t be long before super-blockbusters Lipitor, a cholesterol-lowering drug, and blood thinner Plavix lose their patent protection. Lipitor in the USA alone is taken by 4.3 million patients, and Plavix by 1.4 million.

Lipitor is the world’s top selling medication. It will lose its patent in November this year.

Antipsychotic drug Zyprexa loses its patent in October 2011. Plavix’s goes in May next year. Psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis drug, Enbrel will give way to generics in October 2012.

It is estimated that $225 billions’ worth of annual global sales of drugs will go off patent by the end of 2015.

Generics will be entering several medical areas in a big way, including treatments for HIV, depression, diabetes, asthma, bipolar disorder, hypertension and high triglycerides.

Over the next decade approximately 120 brand names will no longer dominate the market, experts say.

Patients, taxpayers, businesses and health insurance companies will save billions. A generic drug can cost up to 80% less than the brand name version.

US health experts say that a significant number of people who cannot currently afford to pay for their medications, will soon be able to do so. The USA is one of the most expensive countries in the world for prescription medications.

In America today, many people even with private health insurance or Medicare cover are not getting their prescriptions because they simply do not have the money.

Studies have shown that generic drugs are just as good as the brand name ones, says the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). As long as the active ingredient is the same, the medication is just as effective. Some argue that generic versions have uneven safety records. However, studies have shown that brand named drugs have the same risk of contamination due to some bad manufacturing practice, or another reason.

Some experts have dispute this, however. A study performed by scientists at Johns Hopkins University and published in Annals of Neurology found that switching to an anti-epilepsy generic version of a drug carried with it a 10% risk that peak concentrations in the body occurred at different times.
