NEWCASTLE, Wyo. (AP) — Grasshopper infestations have taken on mythic tones here on the arid prairie of northeastern Wyoming — they blanket highways, eat T-shirts off clotheslines and devour nearly every scrap of vegetation on ranches and farms.

The myth may come closer to reality this summer than at any time in decades in several states in the West and the Plains.
A federal survey of adult grasshoppers last fall indicated that parts of Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska and Idaho could face costly grasshopper infestations this summer.

Grasshopper eggs tend to survive better in untilled soil, but that doesn’t stop the grown insects from hopping to cropland and eating crops such as corn, alfalfa, sunflowers, soybeans and sugar beets.

  • F.D.A. Says Millions Got Unapproved Heart Pills

    By NATASHA SINGER

Doctors in the United States wrote more than four million prescriptions last year for nitroglycerin tablets, heart drugs placed under the tongue to reduce the chest pain angina or to stop a heart attack.

But the majority of the drugs sold had not been approved for sale, nor had their safety and effectiveness been vetted, by the Food and Drug Administration.

And many doctors, who discovered only last week that pharmacies were giving their patients unproved heart tablets, now say they have no way of knowing whether patients have suffered unnecessarily as a result.

“If it’s not approved and no one has tested it, we can’t be sure that it’s safe and effective,” said Dr. Harry M. Lever, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic. If patients with angina took substandard or ineffective nitroglycerin tablets, Dr. Lever said, their pain might not subside and the problem could potentially progress to a heart attack.

The F.D.A., which in recent years has been cracking down on a decades-old backlog of unapproved drugs, sent warning letters last week to two drug makers ordering them to stop marketing unapproved nitroglycerin tablets. But the drugs are still being sold at pharmacies while the order takes effect.

The drug makers said they would comply with the order, but said that their tablets were safe.

Free Medical Clinic Returns To Southern California
Thousands of People Expected To Receive Free Medical Care

    KTLA News
    March 25, 2010

LOS ANGELES — A free medical clinic that treated thousands of people last year will once again return to Los Angeles.

For 7 days dentists, doctors and other health care professionals and experts will be at the Los Angeles Sports Arena to treat people who have little or no access to medical care.

The one day clinic is organized by Remote Area Medical, a Tennessee based nonprofit group.  Last August, this free clinic drew 6,000 people to the Forum in Inglewood. More than 3,800 doctors, dentists, nurses and volunteers took part in the 8 day event.

They were able to treat 700 people a day.

Free clinic organizers say that number fell short of the 1,600 people they wanted to treat each day.

This year, clinic organizers say they hope to enlist the help of enough dentists, doctors, nurses and food donors to treat and feed 1,200 people each day.

Fat epidemic linked to chemicals run amok
Fast food not solely to blame for obesity, new research suggests
By Stephen Perrine with Heather Hurlock

It’s not just about calories in versus calories out.

If that were all it took to lose weight — eating a little less and exercising a little more — then weight loss would be as simple as grade-school math: Subtract Y from Z and end up with X.

But if you’ve ever followed a diet program and achieved less than your desired result, you probably came away feeling frustrated, depressed, and maybe a bit guilty. What did I do wrong?

Non-stick chemical in cookware linked to thyroid disease
    by E. Huff, staff writer

(NaturalNews) A British study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives has found that people with high levels of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in their blood also have higher rates of thyroid disease. PFOA is a chemical used in the production of many industrial and consumer products including non-stick cookware, stain-resistant carpet coatings, and fabric waterproofing treatments.

Nearly 4,000 American adults over the age of 20 were tested for PFOA between 1999 and 2006 and evaluated based on thyroid function. Researchers found that those with the highest blood serum levels of PFOA, above 5.7 nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml), were twice as likely to have thyroid disease than those with the lowest levels below 4.0 ng/ml.

Despite the fact that thyroid disease is typically more common in women rather than in men, researchers found that the link between PFOA and thyroid disease is as just as prevalent in men as it is in women.

Researchers seemed to tiptoe around the results of the study, however, carefully avoiding making a direct link between PFOA and thyroid disease. Tamara Galloway, lead author of the study and professor of ecotoxicology at Exeter University, explained that further research is needed to determine exactly how the chemicals affect people’s bodies

Vitamin Shows Early Promise in Treatment of Stroke

Posted by Dr. Mercola | March 20
    2010 | 40,256 views

An early study suggests that vitamin B3, or niacin, a common water-soluble
vitamin, may help improve neurological function after stroke.

When rats with ischemic stroke were given niacin, their brains showed growth
of new blood vessels, and sprouting of nerve cells which greatly improved
    neurological outcome.

Stroke is the third-leading cause of death in America and a leading cause of
disability. Ischemic strokes occur as a result of an obstruction within a blood
vessel supplying blood to the brain. Ischemic stroke accounts for about 87
    percent of all cases.

One underlying condition for this type of obstruction is the development of
fatty cholesterol deposits lining the vessel walls. Niacin is known to be the
most effective medicine in current clinical use for increasing high-density
lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), which helps get rid of those fatty
    deposits.

(NaturalNews) An apple a day keeps the doctor away! This is a saying that has stayed with us for many years. It is believed to have come from an ancient Roman proverb. The Romans truly believed the apple had magical powers to cure illnesses. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why this might be true.

Bees in the City? New York May Let the Hives Come Out of Hiding
    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/15/science/earth/15bees.html?th&emc=th
    By MIREYA NAVARRO
    Kathleen Boyer suspects the mailman.

She said she could not think of anyone else in her neighborhood who would have complained about the two beehives she kept under a pine tree in her front yard in Flatbush, Brooklyn, leading the city’s health department to fine her $2,000 last fall.

“I was kind of surprised,” said Mrs. Boyer, an art director with a media company. “People see us in our bee suit and they’d bring their kids to watch us and ask us questions.”

New York City is among the few jurisdictions in the country that deem beekeeping illegal, lumping the honeybee together with hyenas, tarantulas, cobras, dingoes and other animals considered too dangerous or venomous for city life. But the honeybee’s bad rap — and the days of urban beekeepers being outlaws — may soon be over.
