(NaturalNews) Concerned about using Tamiflu if the second, much worse swine flu breakout comes as promoted and promised? You should be. Besides the insufficient supply that is getting closer to its expiration date, Tamiflu is only partially effective. Furthermore, it’s very expensive, and the side effects are so harsh and dangerous that it has been banned in Japan.

According to the New York Times, February 5, 2005, the World Health Organization (WHO) has even admitted that Tamiflu is not as effective as previously believed. But there is an alternative for several flu viruses, both type A and type B. It’s a natural remedy that has no side effects and is inexpensive. It has been around for quite some time as a cold cure. But lately it has proven effective against virulent flus. It is Black Elderberry extract.

Black Elderberry Extract Benefits

A clinical trial during a severe flu outbreak around 1992-93 in Israel confirmed a perfect cure rate of severe flu victims there. Another study performed in Oslo, Norway more recently, around 2002, also confirmed the amazing efficacy for type A or B flu victims of several different strains. The cures mostly occurred in two days while a few were cured in three days. Tamiflu cures occur normally in 4.5 to 5 days. It took 6 days or more for the flu victims on placebos to recover.

Elderberry has a very high ORAC, or oxygen radical absorption capacity: over twice as much as blueberry. In addition, antioxidants called flavonoids stimulate the immune system. Other compounds in elderberry, called anthocyanins, have an anti-inflammatory effect; which would explain the effect on aches, pains, and fever.

Flu Prevention or Preparation

Dr. Gabriel Cousens and Dr. Russell Blaylock, among many others, recommend avoiding vaccines. There is ample evidence from many sources that at best, vaccines don’t work. In fact, they tend to weaken the immune system, sometimes even bringing about worse conditions than the viral infection itself. Why else would "big pharma" successfully lobby, during the previous administration, for impunity from legal recourse due to complications caused by vaccinations?

What Dr. Cousens recommends is strengthening the immune system with vitamin C and D. Vitamin D storage is increased through skin exposure to outdoor sun and/or mercury free fish oils. Also, it’s an excellent idea to ensure you are taking in plenty of zinc with adequate selenium (don’t exceed 200 mcg) as most of the population suffers from a deficiency of this important mineral, which helps prevent cytokine storms.

Adding sub-lingual (for better absorption) B-12 is another valid protection against cytokine storms.
Getting enough sleep, as so many are sleep deprived, is high on the list of activities required for strong immune systems. Most importantly, having a good emotional attitude, which includes not stressing over pandemics and other issues, is essential to the immune system.

Oh yes, here’s that recipe for making your own black elderberry extract tincture:

Issues

How Safe is the Pill?

The birth control pill was first introduced to the American public for contraceptive use in 1960. By 2002, 11.6 million U.S. women were on the Pill, making it the nation’s leading method of contraception.

But oral contraceptives can have negative health effects. The Pill’s relationship with blood-clot risk and stroke is well-documented, and that risk increases when a woman is a smoker, particularly a smoker over age 35. In addition, studies in recent years have found that birth control pill use:

• Impairs muscle gains in young women
• Increases the risk of breast cancer in pre-menopausal women
• Increases the risk of cervical cancer

And the Pill may interfere with a protein that keeps testosterone unavailable for women’s physiologic needs, thus causing long-term health problems, including sexual dysfunction.

Since 2000, death rates have increased in women between the ages of 35 and 44. All other age groups, meanwhile, have seen a decline. Research on this fact cites the significant increase in the use of birth control pills as a possible contributing factor.

Cookouts

HOLIDAY FOOD SAFETY
Picnics and cookouts often top the list of activities for Memorial Day weekend. But remember, special precautions need to be taken when preparing and serving food during warm weather to avoid foodborne illnesses like salmonellosis.

To help prevent foodborne illness:

* Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water before handling any food and after handling raw poultry, meat or eggs.
* Thoroughly rinse fresh fruits and vegetables.

* Cook foods thoroughly, especially ground beef, poultry and pork. While rare beef is sometimes popular, disease-causing organisms can survive in undercooked meat.

* Keep hot foods hot ( 140° Fahrenheit or above) and cold foods cold ( 40° Fahrenheit or below).

Why Baby Boys Are Turning Into Girls
Published on 15/05/2009

Some cosmetics and soap used by pregnant women have the potential to "feminise" male foetuses during the formative stage in the womb.
Further, the effects of pesticides and herbicides in common use in farms, and where unsuspecting expectant mothers work have also been found
to contain chemicals raise the boys risk of cancer and infertility later in life.

Prof Richard Sharpe, a leading researcher at Britain’s Medical Research Council, says hormone-disrupting chemicals are also linked to soaring rates
of birth defects, testicular cancer and falling sperm counts.

The chemical cocktails block the male sex hormone testosterone, or mimic the female sex hormone oestrogen.

Cleveland Illness Prompts Major Beef Recall

Submitted by hareyan on May 22nd, 2009

Three people’s falling seek in Cleveland area has prompted a major ground beef recall by Valley Meats LLC of Coal Valley of Illinois. The amount of ground meat that is included in this beef recall reaches to 96,000 pounds.

According to Cleveland Leader the three people became sick from E. Coli in the Cleveland, Ohio area. USDA has issued the beef recall. However, we could not find the recall information at USDA’s website.

The health department of Ohio has first noticed and reported illnesses linked to a potentially deadly E. coli on May 13. According to CNN illnesses have also been reported in Pennsylvania and Illinois. This in turn led to this current beef recall by Valley Meats LLC.

Beef recall reminds of ground beef consumption safety rules

Wash hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw meat and poultry. Wash cutting boards, dishes and utensils with hot soapy water. Immediately clean spills. Keep raw meat, fish and poultry away from other food that will not be cooked. Use separate cutting boards for raw meat, poultry and egg products and cooked foods. Consumers should only eat ground beef or ground beef patties that have been cooked to a safe internal temperature of 160° F.

Color of the meat is NOT a reliable indicator that ground beef or ground beef patties have been cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria such as E. coli O157:H7. The only way to be sure ground beef is cooked to a high enough temperature to kill harmful bacteria is to use a thermometer to measure the internal temperature. Refrigerate raw meat and poultry within two hours after purchase or one hour if temperatures exceed 90° F. Refrigerate cooked meat and poultry within two hours after cooking.

Current beef recall products include the following brands.

  • 3S Brand Products
  • Grillmaster Brand Products
  • J & B Brand Products
  • Thick ‘N Savory Brand Products
  • Ultimate Brand Product
  • Products with No Specified Name Brand

Additionally, each product that is included in this ground beef recall bears the establishment number "EST. 5712" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The (2-1), (3-1), (4-1), (5-1) and (6-1) markings refer to the number of portions per one-pound. These ground beef products were produced on March 10, 2009, and were distributed to various consignees nationwide.

Nutrition

Some Baby Foods are Worse Than Junk Food

Some baby foods contain as much sugar and saturated fats as chocolate cookies or cheeseburgers.

A survey of more than 100 foods for babies and toddlers found examples that were 29 percent sugar, and others that contained trans fats, which have been linked to heart disease.

The Children’s Food Campaign, part of food and farming campaign group Sustain, examined the nutritional content of 107 baby and toddler foods. Only half the products were low in saturated fat, salt and sugar.

So, what about organic baby food — is it your safest choice?

Maybe not…

Katharine Wroth of Grist was curious about her organic baby food options, so she took a look at several types of baby food.

She found that, among other results, Earth’s Best had an extensive selection, but also had high sodium levels. Gerber Organic was easy to find, but came in plastic containers. Organic Baby was from a good company, but was sometimes hard to find.

Plum Organics had BPA-free packaging, but a high price and limited flavor options. Happy Baby had the same advantages and the same problems. Little Lettice comes from a company that uses local ingredients and doesn’t ship outside the region, but that means it is only available in Massachusetts.

In the final analysis, the frozen baby foods tasted better than the jarred ones, but they would be prohibitively expensive if they were all you bought. However, they also noted that there is one option that is affordable, tasty, and healthy: making your own.

Your Tuna is Getting More Toxic

The rate of mercury contamination in tuna and other Pacific fish has increased 30 percent since 1990. The increase is a direct result of China’s rapid industrialization, and the mercury content is expected to increase another 50 percent by 2050 if China continues to build more coal-fired power plants.

The data comes from a new study by the U.S. Geologic Survey.

About 40 percent of all U.S. exposure to mercury comes from eating contaminated tuna from the Pacific. Roughly 75 percent of all human exposure to mercury in general comes from eating fish. Mercury poisoning early in life, even in very small amounts, can lead to permanent developmental effects.

Mercury becomes toxic when it is converted by bacteria into a form called methylmercury. Scientists have long known how this conversion takes place in freshwater lakes, reservoirs and rivers, but this study is the first to document how that conversion takes place in the ocean. It shows that methylmercury is produced in mid-depth ocean waters by bacteria decomposing settling algae.
