Foods To Keep You Young
22-Sep-2008

(BlackDoctor.org) — Eat food and stay young! Does that sound too good to be true? Well, that’s because it kind of is. The key to staying young lies in what foods you eat. Add these 7 foods to your diet in order to stay young, fresh, and vibrant.

1: Olive oil

Four decades ago, researchers from the Seven Countries Study concluded that the monounsaturated fats in olive oil were largely responsible for the low rates of heart disease and cancer on the Greek island of Crete. Now, we know that olive oil also contains polyphenols- powerful antioxidants that may help prevent age-related diseases.

2: Yogurt

In the 1970s, Soviet Georgia was rumored to have more centenarians per capita than any other country. Reports at the time claimed that the secret of their long lives was yogurt, a food ubiquitous in their diets. While the age-defying powers of yogurt never have been proved directly, yogurt is rich in calcium, which helps stave off osteoporosis and contains "good bacteria" that help maintain good health and diminish the incidence of age-related intestinal illness.

3: Fish

Thirty years ago, researchers began to study why the native Inuits of Alaska were remarkably free of heart disease. The reason, scientists now think, is the extraordinary amount of fish they consume. Fish is an abundant source of omega-3 fats, which help prevent cholesterol buildup in arteries and protect against abnormal heart rhythms.

4: Chocolate

The Kuna people of the San Blas islands, off the coast of Panama, have a rate of heart disease that is nine times less than that of mainland Panamanians. The reason? The Kuna drink plenty of a beverage made with generous proportions of cocoa, which is unusually rich in flavanols that help preserve the healthy function of blood vessels. Maintaining youthful blood vessels lowers risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, and dementia.

5: Blueberries

In a landmark study published in 1999, researchers at Tufts University’s Jean Mayer Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging fed rats blueberry extract for a period of time that in "rat lives" is equivalent to 10 human years. These rats outperformed rats fed regular chow on tests of balance and coordination when they reached old age. Compounds in blueberries (and other berries) mitigate inflammation and oxidative damage, which are associated with age-related deficits in memory and motor function.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is alerting consumers that seven Mr. Brown instant coffee and milk tea products manufactured in China are being recalled by the King Car Food Industrial Co. Ltd. due to possible contamination with melamine. The products, manufactured by China’s Shandong Duqing Inc., are:

* Mr. Brown Mandheling Blend Instant Coffee (3-in-1)
* Mr. Brown Arabica Instant Coffee (3-in-1)
* Mr. Brown Blue Mountain Blend Instant Coffee (3-in-1)
* Mr. Brown Caramel Macchiato Instant Coffee (3-in-1)
* Mr. Brown French Vanilla Instant Coffee (3-in-1)
* Mr. Brown Mandhling Blend instant Coffee (2-in-1)
* Mr. Brown Milk Tea (3-in-1)

The FDA recommends that consumers not consume any of the above Mr. Brown instant coffee and milk tea products. The FDA also recommends that retailers and foodservice operators remove the products from sale or service.

As of September 25, 2008, the FDA testing of milk based products imported into the United States from China has not found melamine contamination.

GMO Chicken

September 19, 2008

WASHINGTON (AP) — Super Chicken strutted a step closer to the dinner table Thursday. The government said it will start considering proposals to sell genetically engineered animals as food, a move that could lead to faster-growing fish, cattle that can resist mad cow disease or perhaps heart-healthier eggs laid by a new breed of chickens.

The rules will also apply to drugs and other medical materials from genetically engineered animals, a field with explosive potential.
U.S. supermarkets currently sell no meat from genetically engineered animals. But a Boston-area company called Aqua Bounty Technologies hopes to win approval next year for its faster-growing salmon and make the fish available by 2011. "It tastes just like any other farm-raised salmon," said vice chairman Elliot Entis, who has sampled it.

Reaction from consumer groups was mixed. They welcomed the government’s decision to regulate genetically altered animals, but they cautioned that crucial details remain to be spelled out. For example, the Food and Drug Administration does not plan to require that all genetically engineered meat, poultry and fish be labeled as such. It would be labeled only if there was a change in the final product, such as low-cholesterol filet mignon.

"They are talking about pigs that are going to have mouse genes in them, and this is not going to be labeled?" said Jean Halloran, director of food policy for Consumers Union. "We are close to speechless on this." Consumers Union publishes Consumer Reports magazine.
Nonetheless, Gregory Jaffe, who heads the biotechnology project at the Center for Science in the Public Interest called the FDA’s move a "good first step."

"This is the first time the federal government is announcing a comprehensive regulatory system that addresses the concerns from these animals," said Jaffe. "But it may not have addressed all the environmental concerns."

What would happen if a genetically engineered animal escaped and started reproducing with wild animals of the same species? asked Jaffe. The FDA said it would address that issue.

Some Farmers Now Protected Against Monsanto Lawsuits
Farmers with crops that become contaminated by patented genetically engineered (GE) seeds or pollen have been the target of harassing lawsuits brought by biotech patent holders, especially Monsanto.

But a landmark piece of legislation protecting California’s farmers from crippling lawsuits has passed through both legislative houses.

AB 541 enacts protections against lawsuits brought against California farmers who have not been able to prevent the inevitable drift of GE pollen or seed onto their land. The bill also establishes a mandatory crop sampling protocol to prevent biotech companies investigating alleged violations from sampling crops without the explicit permission of the farmers who own the land.

GLOBAL RECALLS

The Associated Press

By GILLIAN WONG –
BEIJING (AP) — An industrial chemical that made its way into China’s dairy supplies and that authorities blame in the death of four babies has turned up in numerous Chinese-made exports abroad — from candies to yogurt to rice balls.

British supermarket chain Tesco removed Chinese-made White Rabbit Creamy Candies off its shelves as a precaution amid reports that samples of the milk candy in Singapore and New Zealand had tested positive for melamine — an industrial chemical used to make plastics and fertilizer.
The Shanghai government’s quality watchdog was investigating whether the chemical was in the candy, the official Xinhua News Agency quoted government spokesman Chen Qiwei as saying. The government also urged a Bright Food Group Co. subsidiary to stop selling the candy, pull it off store shelves and recall exports that are likely to have problems, it said.

The subsidiary, Guan Sheng Yuan, has been making White Rabbit candies for almost 50 years, with exports to Southeast Asia and Chinese communities overseas.

A man who answered the phone at the company said Bright Food Group is having a meeting to discuss what to do next after reports the candy had tested positive for melamine. He did not give his name, saying the company has yet to appoint a spokesman.

Chinese baby formula tainted with the chemical has been blamed for the deaths of four infants and the illnesses of 53,000 others in China. Health experts say ingesting a small amount of the chemical poses no danger, but melamine can cause kidney stones and lead to kidney failure. Infants are particularly vulnerable.

More than a dozen countries have banned or recalled Chinese dairy products. One of the latest was France, which does not import Chinese dairy products but has halted imports of Chinese biscuits, candy or other foods that could contain Chinese dairy derivatives. The French government described the measure as a precaution.

South Korea announced late Wednesday that it was banning imports of Chinese-made food products containing powdered milk. The food watchdog Korea Food and Drug Administration said tests found high levels of melamine in two biscuit products imported from China and Hong Kong.

Also Wednesday, Indonesia distributed a list of 28 products that it said may contain tainted Chinese milk, including Oreo cookies, Snickers bars and M&M chocolate candies.

U.S. and European consumer safety officials urged Beijing to better enforce product safety standards.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said White Rabbit candy has been added to its list of products being inspected at ports of entry, but that no melamine-tainted goods from China of any sort have turned up yet. Nonetheless, some ethnic grocers started removing the popular candies from their shelves.

New Ford Fiesta ECOnetic gets 65 mpg – but not available in U.S.
DAILY NEWS STAFF
Tuesday, September 9th 2008, 4:29 PM

The new Ford Fiesta ECOnetic will only be available in Europe.
.
The 2009 Ford Fiesta ECOnetic gets 65 miles a gallon. Good news for the struggling American company, right? Not so fast – the Fiesta ECOnetic, which goes on sale in November, will only be available in Europe.

According to Business Week, the main reason that the Fiesta ECOnetic will not go on sale in the U.S. is that it runs on diesel. In America, diesel still has a bad reputation as something with a bad odor that is used for tractor trailers. In fact, new diesel vehicles have anti-pollution technology that make them as cleaner or cleaner than gasoline-powered vehicles. The new diesel cars are also 30% more fuel-efficient than gasoline-powered cars. As a result, in Europe, half of all cars sold last year were powered by diesel.

But in the U.S. diesel is used by only 3% of cars. Taxes here make diesel cost as much as a dollar more per gallon. Instead of diesel, hybrids such as the Toyota Prius are seen as more trendy.

According to Business Week, the price of the car is also an impediment – current exchange rates mean that the Fiesta ECOnetic would cost around $25,700 in the U.S., compared to $24,000 for the Prius.

While Ford won’t go introduce their diesel car into the U.S. market, international automakers such as Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Honda do plan to introduce such cars here in a couple of years.

It would be a nightmare for Ford if diesel cars do eventually become popular in the U.S., but from other companies, when Ford has one all ready to go.

FYI – CINNAMON

Cinnamon is the Key Ingredient in Anti-Mold Wrappers
In addition to its other qualities as a flavoring, cinnamon kills microbes. Researchers have taken advantage of that property to develop an anti-mold wrapper.

Even with bread already tainted with mold, wax paper made with 6 percent cinnamon oil inhibited mold growth by 96 percent, prolonging freshness by up to 10 days. Plain wax paper did not slow the mold at all.

The environmentally friendly wrapper may also be effective in keeping fruits, vegetables and meats fresh.

AUTISM

Autism Statistics Alarm African Children

Educator Anne Harrington and pediatrician Dr. Dan McLellan both noticed an unusual number of Somali children turning up in their autism programs in Minneapolis, and began to wonder why.

Now that question has captured the attention of Minnesota state and federal health officials, as fears about a possible surge in autism sweep Minnesota’s Somali community.

Autism, a brain disorder that can cause disruptive and withdrawn behavior, has been rising rapidly throughout the country. The discovery of a cluster among Somalis could be significant, or could just be a statistical fluke.

Last year, Somali children made up just under 6 percent of the school population, but 17 percent of those in early childhood autism programs. The numbers have been creeping up for several years, especially among young children. As of July 2008, nearly 4 percent of Somali students were in autism-related programs — about twice the district average.
